READFILM INSTALLER UPDATE (2/17/2006) Updated Installation and Operating Notes For Mac OS X If you don't have QuickTime or Acrobat Reader installed, it is better to get the lastest versions from Apple.com and Adobe.com rather than to install the old versions that come on the disc. The disc will work fine with newer versions of QT and Adobe Reader. If you are on a Mac running OS X you MUST use more recent versions of Reader and Quicktime. OS X offers a number of choices for viewing files and folders in a window. The window for How To Read a Film is meant to be viewed in Icon view. If you aren't in Icon view please switch before proceeding. (It's in the View menu in Finder.) ----------- There is one minor problem with newer versions of Adobe Reader: rollover buttons sometimes work only in one direction. To go backwards, click outside the frame, then click inside again. ----------- As of 5/1/05 there was a bug in Adobe Reader 7 for the Mac that made it impossible to view movies when Quicktime 7 was installed. This was fixed in Adobe Reader 7.0.7 in January 2006. If you are having problems, update Adobe Reader. (This is not a problem with Adobe Reader 6 or Acrobat Reader 5.) ----------- NOTE: You must use Adobe Reader to open How To Read a Film! If you find that it is opening in Preview, stop! OS X Preview will also open pdf files, but you will lose all of the interactive features of the disc. (In other words, it won't work.) Although the Adobe icon identifies the Mainmenu file as belonging to the Adobe Reader application, it may open in Preview if you have set your system to use Preview for files of this type. To get the MainMenu file to open properly in Adobe Reader you have the following choices: * "Right-click"
on the file (hold down the CTRL key while you click). Choose "Open
With." Choose Adobe Reader. * On the How To Read a Film disc, navigate to Resource/Mainmenu.pdf. Highlight this file in the Finder. Go to File/Get Info (CMD i). Change "Open With" to Adobe Reader. ----------- Adobe Reader (formerly Acrobat Reader) has gone through numerous revisions since How To Read a Film was completed. It is now a much more complicated program. In addition, since you probably use Adobe Reader for other things, some of your Preference settings may have been changed to conflict with the How To Read a Film disc. Here are some notes that will help you use the disc effectively with newer versions of Reader. "Acrobat Hints" in the booklet notes that F7 will toggle the Adobe Reader menu bar on and off. Adobe has since changed this switch to avoid a conflict with OS X. It is now CMD-SHIFT-M. A single click on one of the active areas in the MainMenu will sometimes open the document behind the menu. Double-click to open the new document in front. Similarly, you may see a broken-movie icon with some of the QuickTimes. Just double-click; the movie isn't broken. Adobe Reader 7 has an elaborate security system which can get in the way when you try to play multimedia. To avoid the security questions go to Preferences/Trust Manager and "Change permission for selected multimedia player to ALWAYS." Do this for both Trusted and Nontrusted documents. Double-check to make sure the changes have been recorded. Allow all the choices here. Also, make sure that QuickTime is the "selected multimedia player"! Also make sure that "Allow documents to open other files" is checked. In Preferences/Page Display set Default Page Layout to SINGLE PAGE or CONTINUOUS. Set resolution to Custome Resolution: 72 pixels/inch. This way the diagrams will display properly. Use CoolType and Smooth Text should also be active. In Preferences/General deactivate "Open cross-document links in same window." This is very important (and noted in the original installation guide). In Preferences/JavaScript make sure JavaScript is enabled. If you are having trouble with the aliases to MainMenu and The Bin in the main disc window please note that the paths to the original documents are Resource/Mainmenu.pdf and Resource/Front/TheBin.pdf. You can navigate to these and make aliases to store on your hard drive. Similarly, the Zoetrope movie random player is at Resource/Zoetrope/Zoe2000. NOTE: To run the Zoetrope application you must have Classic installed and active. If you have an Intel Mac, Classic is not available. Therefore, you can't run the random player. Everything else on the disc will work fine on an Intel Mac. If you've read this far and are still with me as we work our way through this thicket of Adobe settings you deserve a reward, so here are some of the Easter Eggs on the disc. (There are others!) • Check out the B, M, and W keys on the laptop keyboard on the MainMenu desk. • Check out that unnamed folder in the Main disc window. • A click on the period at the very end of the How To Read a Film text expresses my sentiments well.
